The Legend of the Beautiful Maiden and the Creation of Dinagat Islands

Long ago, in the distant past, a beautiful maiden named Bitoon lived in a village near the sea. She was known for her beauty, grace, and kindness, and was loved by everyone in the village. Bitoon lived with her father, Kadlum, a wise old man who was deeply respected by the people.

One day, a great and powerful Datu from a faraway land visited their village and became enchanted by Bitoon’s beauty. He desired her to be his wife. However, Bitoon was already in love with a young fisherman from the same village, whom she had promised to marry.

The Datu, angered by her refusal, vowed to take Bitoon by force. He sent his warriors to kidnap her, but Bitoon, using her wits, escaped and ran toward the sea, where she sought refuge. As she ran, her father, Kadlum, who had been watching over her, performed a powerful ritual to protect her.

He called upon the spirits of the sea and sky to help. The gods, seeing Bitoon’s purity and bravery, answered his prayers. A great storm formed, and as it raged, the waters of the sea rose higher and higher, swallowing the land where the Datu’s warriors stood. But as the waters receded, a new group of islands appeared.

These islands were scattered across the sea like jewels. They became known as the Dinagat Islands, a name derived from the local word “dinagat,” which means “to be tossed” or “to be thrown,” symbolizing the way the islands were thrown into existence by the storm and the spirit of Bitoon’s bravery.

The islands became a symbol of Bitoon’s courage and the wisdom of her father, Kadlum. As for the Datu, his plan was thwarted, and he was never seen again. Bitoon and her beloved fisherman lived in peace, and the people of Dinagat Islands have carried on the legend for generations.
