The famous mountain lake got its name from the Cebuano words “baba sa buwaya” or crocodile’s mouth, referring to the shape of Bababu’s cove. It is located at Barangay Melgar, Dinagat Islands, 4.2 nautical miles from San Jose.
The lake is “meromictic,” meaning
it contains both fresh and saltwater
that do not mix. These two layers of
water remain separate because the
lake is protected from the wind by
towering limestone walls covered in
lush foliage.
Another unique feature is its
650-meter underwater cave system
that connects the lake to the sea, the
longest in the country.
